Shiv Sena legislators have been relocated to a hotel in Malad, Mumbai, ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. The Maharashtra legislature's returning officer for the Rajya Sabha election has requested advice from the Election Commission on what procedures should be taken on polling day to prevent the spread of infection in the face of mounting COVID-19 cases.

The opposition BJP has fielded three candidates for the six RS seats up for grabs in Maharashtra, the Congress and NCP one apiece, and the Shiv Sena two. The Bharatiya Janata Party has enough votes in the Assembly to win two seats on its own. The Congress, Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party, all constituents of the MVA, can each win one seat and will have enough votes to win another.

The Shiv Sena is counting on these extra votes to secure its second seat. As of the present, the effective election quota per candidate is 42. The ruling Shiv Sena has 55 MLAs in the 288-member House, which serves as the electoral college for the RS elections. The NCP has 52 MLAs and Congress has one (44).

While two NCP MLAs, Anil Deshmukh and Minister Nawab Malik, are currently imprisoned, one seat remains open. Aside from the four major parties, there are 25 MLAs from smaller parties and Independents in the Assembly. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde, and Dhananjay Mahadik have been nominated by the BJP, which has 106 members in the House. Sanjay Pawar of the Shiv Sena and Mahadik of the BJP are competing for the sixth seat.
