Sharad Pawar, the leader of the
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), alleged that Maharashtra Navnirman Sena founder Raj Thackeray was doing the
BJP's bidding rather than speaking up on matters that affect the common man. He said that the MNS chairman mentioned nothing about the BJP and instead targeted the Nationalist Congress Party, a key partner in the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi administration.
"It's time to talk about inflation and unemployment," Pawar remarked, "but no one does." He did clarify, though, that Raj Thackeray did not speak about these topics. A day after the MNS president made a strong case for the Uniform Civil Code and underlined the importance of regulating population growth in the country, Pawar said that Raj Thackeray is doing the BJP's bidding.
He further denied that he (Pawar) is an atheist, as claimed by Raj Thackeray. "I visit temples, but I don't believe in bravado," the NCP leader told reporters. Attempts are being made to disrupt Maharashtra's social harmony, according to Pawar, and communal ideology is being fostered in the state.
Raj Thackeray had stated at a gathering in Thane on Tuesday night that unless the
Shiv Sena-led state government removed the high-decibel loudspeakers from mosques by May 3, MNS members will play the Hanuman Chalisa in front of mosques. Pawar slammed Raj Thackeray for threatening the state administration over the removal of mosque loudspeakers. He believes the state government should take a clear stance on the issue.
Raj Thackeray's accusation that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the family members of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, but not the latter's cousin Supriya Sule, the Pawar senior's daughter, was also labelled "childish" by Pawar. Sharad Pawar's nephew is Ajit Pawar.
