As the political crisis in Maharashtra heated up on Thursday, Rajya Sabha member and noted advocate Mahesh Jethmalani asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to condemn a statement by his party
Shiv Sena's chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who said the Sena's rebel MLAs "will find it difficult to return and move around in Maharashtra."
Jethmalani, the son of late-famous lawyer Ram Jethmalani and a prominent lawyer himself is a nominated member of the Upper House and was previously affiliated with the
BJP. Raut, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, made the statement earlier in the day while speaking to NDTV about the revolt of the birthday party's legislators led by Eknath Shinde.
In response to a specific question on whether or not Uddhav Thackeray will remain chief minister, Raut stated, "Let all the MLAs come to the floor of the House." Then we'll see. These MLAs who have resigned will find it tough to return to Maharashtra and roam around." Since then, the Sena has modified its attitude.
Jethmalani described Raut's statement as "a scary threat from a man who has become a law unto himself in the state of Maharashtra" in a tweet. He went on to say that it should be "seriously opposed by every right-minded legislator in the country," particularly Uddhav Thackeray and NCP chairman Shard Pawar. In Maharashtra, the Sena's ruling partnership includes the
NCP and the
Congress.
Eknath Shinde, who is camping in Guwahati with about 40 MLAs, including Independents, has asked that the Shiv Sena break the alliance because Sena leaders "suffered the most" during the regime's final two-and-a-half years. Some rebels have suggested that the Sena establish a new government with its "natural ally," the BJP. The MLAs have reserved a week's stay at a hotel in Guwahati, signalling that they are prepared for the long haul.
"We are ready to walk out of the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) government in Maharashtra, but party rebels should return to Mumbai (from Guwahati) within 24 hours," Shiv Sena main spokesperson Sanjay Raut said. "Discuss the issue with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray," Raut remarked, adding, "Don't write letters on Twitter and WhatsApp."
