Days after stoking controversy with his "go home and cook" statement to NCP MP Supriya Sule, state BJP president Chandrakant Patil apologised on Sunday. Patil stated in a letter to Rupali Chakankar, the chairwoman of the Maharashtra State Women's Commission, that he had no intention of disrespecting Sule or women in general. The Commission had sent Patil a notice requesting clarification on his comment.

"I have spent the last 45 years working for women's empowerment. The BJP has 12 female legislators in the state assembly and 5 female MPs from Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha. I admire Supriyatai and ladies in general. I'm hurt that Supriyatai and other women were mocked for employing a rustic saying. "I regret offending Supriyatai, moms, and sisters," Patil added.

Sule stated that Patil's apology demonstrated his "large-heartedness," and he urged everyone to put the subject to rest. "The Commission, which had instructed Patil to submit a clarification within two days, received his clarification," Chakankar added. Patil has expressed regret. The Commission has chastised Patil and asked him to ensure that his comments on women do not harm their self-esteem."

Patil lambasted Sule during the BJP's OBC reservation rally on Wednesday, saying, "Why are you (Sule) even in politics, just go home and cook." Go to Delhi or a graveyard, but make sure we get the OBC quota. "How come you don't know how to secure an appointment with the Chief Minister while being a Lok Sabha member?"

Patil's words sparked outrage from the NCP, Shiv Sena and other parties, with CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat declaring that sexism is on the rise in Indian politics and urging women parliamentarians from all parties to unite against it. Kanimozhi, a DMK MP, promised to introduce legislation against the public shaming of women.

Patil did not apologise on Friday but said his comment was twisted and taken out of context. "The BJP has the most female MLAs in the state assembly. Those who have misconstrued my statement should learn to live in the countryside. Supriyatai has taken my views seriously. "It's not in my character to disrespect women," he said.
