In the midst of the Shiv Sena
trading accusations over the renaming of Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar, Industry Minister Subhash Desai met with Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday and urged him to rename the Aurangabad airport after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He also urged the minister to enlarge the airport's runway to accommodate foreign aircraft and enhance the frequency of flights between Mumbai and Aurangabad.
He also urged the minister to allow a statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to be placed within the airport complex. A resolution to advocate changing the name of the Aurangabad airport to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj airport was unanimously passed by both chambers of the Maharashtra Legislature in March 2020, according to Desai in a letter. "The same resolution has previously been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Directorate General."
As you are aware, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj made a significant contribution to the Maratha Empire, and he is an iconic character in Maharashtra's rich and dynamic history. I respectfully request that you take the required steps to rename the airport in honour of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj," he stated.
He argued that the renaming of Aurangabad airport is crucial for the city and Maharashtra as a whole. Desai also presented a compelling case for expanding the frequency of flights to Aurangabad, an international tourism destination that includes world heritage sites such as Ajanta and Ellora. "Given the importance of Aurangabad as an international tourist destination and the Marathwada region's industrial base, flight frequency must be enhanced." You must begin your Mumbai to Aurangabad and Aurangabad to Mumbai flights in the morning. These flights will carry enough passengers," he remarked.
Desai also advocated for the expansion of the runway at the Aurangabad airport, citing increased aviation traffic and future needs. "This may necessitate more land acquisition, but it must be prioritised, and we must ensure that present air traffic is not disrupted while these improvements are carried out," he said.
