The state administration has handed the cabinet sub-committee charged with studying the citizenship legislation — the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) — another extension. The committee now has until August 31 to present its report to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The state administration issued a directive on Thursday.

This is the fifth extension for the committee, which is led by State Transportation Minister Anil Parab. The committee was meant to present its report on March 31, 2020, after being formed on March 13, 2020, however, because of the COVID-19 outbreak in the state, it was given an eight-month extension until November 30, 2020. Last year, a second extension was granted until May 31. The deadline was later extended until August 31. The deadline for submitting the report was extended to February 28.

The committee consists of six members, including two representatives from each of the state's three coalition partners in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Jitendra Awhad and Nawab Malik of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Anil Parab and Uday Samant of the Shiv Sena, and Sunil Kedar and Vijay Wadettiwar of the Congress are among the members.

"The committee's request for an additional extension was being considered. The government has decided to give the committee until August 31, 2022, to review CAA, NPR, and NRC and present a report to the government, which will assist the cabinet in making a final decision" According to a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security.
