The Maharashtra government of Eknath Shinde faces a floor test today following the BJP's election of Rahul Narvekar as Speaker on Sunday. The special two-day session of the State Legislative Assembly follows a high-voltage political thriller in the state in which a new government formed by dissident Shiv Sena MLA Shinde toppled the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) regime.

Earlier on Sunday evening, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde met with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, BJP MLAs, and other party leaders at a hotel in Mumbai to plan a strategy for the floor test. "On Monday, the second day of the legislature's special session, the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition administration will face a majority test.

What exactly the government's policy will be was reviewed today in a meeting attended by all MLAs "according to sources
Fadnavis claimed that the Shinde government would win with 166 votes. "The youngest speaker candidate received 164 votes today, while two MLAs were unable to attend due to health problems. In the vote of confidence, we would demonstrate our majority with 166 votes "He stated.

In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP currently has 106 MLAs, while Shinde leads 39 rebel Shiv Sena legislators and a few Independents. Following the recent death of a Shiv Sena MLA, the Assembly's current strength has been decreased to 287, making the majority mark 144.

On Sunday, the Shinde-led camp and the BJP secured a major victory when BJP's Rahul Narwekar was chosen Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, defeating Shiv Sena nominee Rajan Salvi. Surprisingly, amid the ongoing feud between two Shiv Sena factions led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, both sides issued separate whips to party MLAs directing them to vote in favour of their respective candidates during the speaker's election on Sunday and then accused each other of violating them.
