The NCP alleged on Wednesday that Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik's grilling by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case was yet another example of abuse of power and a pressure strategy to "suppress his voice" because he had recently been exposed to wrongdoings by some people.

The BJP, on the other hand, believes the ED should be allowed to conclude its investigation before calling the action "vendetta politics". Officials said the ED questioned state Minority Affairs Minister and NCP top spokesperson Malik on Wednesday in a money-laundering investigation linked to the Mumbai underworld, fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides.

The ED's office in south Mumbai's Ballard Estate region is said to have received the 62-year-old NCP leader around 8 a.m., and the agency is recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they added. The move against Malik, according to NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto, was nothing more than "pressure measures" to quiet his voice.

"As the Chief Spokesperson for a political party, he was exposing the wrongdoings of several individuals. Truthful voices cannot be silenced "Crasto sent out a tweet. Jayant Patil, Maharashtra NCP President and State Minister, told reporters in Solapur that this was another example of "misuse of power".

"The ED showed up at his (Malik's) house at 6 A.M. without giving him any notice. The ED had brought its cops with it. Some people may be attempting to irritate him on purpose. The ED detaining a state minister for investigation without any prior notice is a complete violation of the law "He asserted.

Patil said he didn't know what connection Malik was being investigated for, but that it appeared anger was being "deliberately" directed towards the minister. Sudhir Mungantiwar, a senior BJP politician and former state finance minister, told reporters that it is too early to term the ED's investigation "vendetta politics" because the details of the action are still unknown.

"What do we call how Union minister Narayan Rane was detained a few months ago? The state authorities are also pursuing BJP MLA Nitesh Rane. Malik is not a member of the NCP's state leadership. If he has done anything suspect, it should be investigated. There should be no haste in labelling it as vendetta politics "Mungantiwar expressed his thoughts.
