Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, had claimed for the Presidential Election that Draupadi Murmu would win 200 of the state's 288 legislative seats, but Droupadi Murmu, the NDA's Presidential candidate, received 181 votes, while Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate, received 98.

Both the Shinde camp and the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena supported Murmu's nomination. The 15 lawmakers from the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena supported Murmu. Due to their absence, one legislator from each of the BJP and Shinde camps did not cast a ballot on July 18.

On July 14, during Murmu's visit to Mumbai, Shinde, who had received 164 votes to MVA's 99 during the floor test, had asserted that she would receive the support of 200 lawmakers due to the discontent among the NCP and the Congress. Shinde's calculations, however, were incorrect because the opposition's vote was not divided. The Speaker of the state assembly abstained.

As they had done in the Rajya Sabha and State Council Elections, Shinde and DCM Devendra Fadnavis had anticipated using the uncertainty in the NCP and the Congress to solicit votes from their legislators. During the presidential election, they were unable to work the same magic. The Shinde-Fadnavis coalition had also pleaded for the tribal MLAs who were opposed to her to back her. There were no takers, though.
