The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to increase polling stations from the present 8,500 to roughly 11,000 for the
upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections in February 2022. The decision to expand the number of booths was made a few months ago, but it has now been finalized, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials.
By December 10, the Mumbai civic council has resolved to submit its final draught of ward delimitation to the State Election Commission (SEC). The civic administration has chosen to increase nine electoral wards in its existing strength due to population growth during the last decade. After nearly two decades, the number of electoral wards in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will grow from 227 to 236.
The last time BMC's ward numbers were increased was in 2002 when they went from 221 to 227. Based on the 2001 census, the city's population was estimated to be 1.19 crore people. According to the 2011 census, the city's population increased by 3.87 percent from 2001 to 1.24 crore.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) now has 227 corporators (electoral wards), who are elected legislators who represent 24 administrative wards based on the 2011 census. The current elected MPs' tenure will expire on March 7, 2022, and elections will be held in February 2022. The
Shivsena has 97 seats, the
BJP has 83, the
Congress has 29, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has 8, the Samajwadi Party has 6, the AIMIM has 2, and the MNS has one.
Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, elaborated on the arrangements, saying, "The State Election Commission has made recommendations to the BMC after the state government enacted an ordinance. We will transmit a draught to the Election Commission until December 10 after making the required amendments."
"We're in charge of four things: validating ward boundaries, voter lists, polling station setup, and staffing arrangements for the
elections," Kakani explained. "In the state, there are elections for various municipal corporations and Grampanchayat elections. As a result, the state Election Commission will choose the date of the BMC election "According to a top BMC official.
