After claiming that Samarth Ramdas was Chhatrapati Shivaji's mentor, Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyai sparked a stir. "On this land, many chakravartis (emperors) and maharajas were born. he stated "I have no doubts about Chandragupta and Shivaji Maharaj's abilities. Like a mother who has a significant influence on her child's development. In our society, the function of guru (teacher) is also very important "The governor has stated previously.

The Governor has been heavily criticized by both the ruling and opposition parties. His statement came at a time when the chasm between him and the MVA administration was increasing on several issues. Protests were held by the NCP and Congress in  response to the Governor's remarks. Several leaders, notably Chhatrapati Udayanraje and Chhatrapati Shivendraraje Bhosale, were outraged.

"Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the nation's inspiration, and from what I understood, from what I had read in the early days, I knew that Samarth Ramdas Swami was his master," the Governor subsequently clarified. NCP MP Supriya Sule had previously uploaded a video referring to his father and party president Sharad Pawar, in which he explained that Chhatrapati Shivaji's mother Jijamata, not Samarth Ramdas, was his mentor. She asserted that there is no proof of a teacher-disciple relationship between Shivaji and Ramdas.

Sule further highlighted a Bombay High Court Aurangabad bench decision on July 16, 2018, in which the state government said that "no record was available to show that Shivaji Maharaj needed to see Ramdas or that Shivaji Maharaj was treating Ramdas as his guru." "There is no indication that Ramdas and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had a guru-shishya relationship," Sule added.

Udayanraje Bhosale, a BJP MP and a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj said the Governor's remark had hurt the feelings of the Maratha warrior king's followers and the whole state of Maharashtra and demanded that it be removed immediately. Ramdas was "never" the Maratha warrior king's guru, according to Bhosale, and Koshyari should have remarked in light of his position.
