On Thursday, a local court in Mumbai issued a process (summons) to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut in connection with a defamation complaint filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya's wife, Medha Somaiya. Raut has been summoned to appear before the Sewri metropolitan magistrate's court on July 4. The issuance of a process marks the start of criminal proceedings before a metropolitan or judicial magistrate based on an individual's complaint. When the process is issued, the accused person must appear in court.

Somaiya claimed in her complaint that Raut made false and defamatory accusations against her and her husband, accusing them of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam involving the construction and maintenance of some public toilets under the jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.

"The accused's statements to the media are defamatory in and of themselves. The statements were made in order to discredit my character in the eyes of the general public "According to the complaint. Somaiya requested that the court issue process or notice to Raut and begin proceedings against him on defamation charges under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code.
