Addressing the media, the Republican Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale said that their alliance with the Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena in BMC Elections 2017 will depend on the respect and the seat share offered to the RPI by these two party.

“If the Shiv Sena – BJP decide to contest the BMC polls seperately,we will ally with the one who offers us a bigger share of power. The BJP may be our natural partner but if it does not take into account our concerns, we will ally with the Sena” he added.

“We want the post of the mayor as well as the chairmanship of the standing committee, along with representations in various other civic committees,” he said.

Athawale also said that the RPI will demand 70-80 seats from its ally. The RPI chief said he will meet the Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis demanding a probe into the murder of a RPI worker. The Bhiwandi  unit of RPI has already broken ties with the BJP alleging that the local BJP legislator was reponsible for the murder.

The Sena and BJP have been involved in a bitter war of words blaming each other for the problems in the city and have indicated that they might fight the BMC elections independently due early next year.

The RPI was also not given a ministerial berth in the Centre, which is led by the NDA. However Athawale advocated that he would strive to bring about an alliance between the Sena and BJP.
