The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has turned down corporators demand to install CCTV cameras in their wards from their own funds citing civic rules.

Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Vinod Shelar raised the issue in the civic standing committee and said that he decided to install CCTVs in his ward in Malad for security reasons from his corporator funds. As he forwarded his proposal to the ward office, permission was denied under the pretext that it is not included in works carried out under corporator’s funds.

MNS corporator Sandeep Deshpande alleged that civic officials are not taking into account the security issue seriously. Senior BJP corporator Dilip Patel demanded that it should be made compulsory for new societies to cover roads opposite their premises by CCTVs.

Meanwhile, the standing committee passed the proposal to install CCTVs at three major civic municipal hospitals – KEM, Sion and Nair – to prevent threats from anti-social elements.
