Sanjay Kelkar, a member of the
Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) from Thane, has claimed that a plot is being developed to turn Thane into a Mafia city by handing over the encroachment department to the infamous officer Mahesh Aher. Kelkar has also written to Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) President Dr. Vipin Sharma, requesting that Mahesh Aher's position as Assistant Commissioner of the TMC's encroachment department be revoked.
TMC had previously made transfers at the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner levels. Deputy office superintendent Mahesh Aher was elevated to Assistant Commissioner of TMC's encroachment department during the transfers. In an interview with the Free Press Journal, Sanjay Kelkar, a BJP MLA from Thane, said, "Mahesh Aher has been accused of several things in the past, and he is also a divisive character in the Thane Municipal Corporation. Due to Shiv-Sena's lobbying, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Commissioner in the encroachment department.
Shiv Sena appears to be attempting to conceal all illicit acts by bringing and promoting such personnel for their gain. Even the TMC chief appears to be turning a blind eye to such acts." Kelkar further claimed that Mahesh Aher was hired to assist the city's illicit construction projects. "Many educated Thane residents are opposed to Aher's appointment as an Assistant Commissioner in the encroachment department," Kelkar remarked. Kelkar also claimed that if it is granted free reign in the city, it will launch a public campaign against unlawful structures shortly.
