A Mumbai Sessions Court on Monday denied Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya's motion for pre-arrest bail in connection with the misuse of money case filed by the Mumbai Police. Somaiya and his son have been charged with allegedly misappropriating about Rs 50 crores raised to prevent the decommissioning of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Following a complaint from former army personnel, a case was filed against them at the Trombay Police Station in the city.

The campaign was undertaken not only by the BJP but also by Congress and the Shiv Sena, according to Senior Advocate Ashok Mundargi. Because the programme was run by a political party, the applicant had no say in how the money was spent. He further stated that the complaint was filed after nine years.

Pradip Gharat, a Special Public Prosecutor, rejected the plea, claiming that custody interrogation was essential due to the position and money gathered. If this money isn't used to save the INS from being decommissioned, Gharat says it's necessary to figure out where it went. He went on to say that decommissioning cost around Rs 7 crores and that if Rs 57 crores had been raised, the ship might not have needed to be decommissioned.
