The Maharashtra government has begun the process of appointing administrators to nine municipal corporations whose terms are set to expire in March and April. Thane, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Nashik, Ulhasnagar, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, and Nagpur shall be appointed in accordance with the regulations that apply to these civic authorities.
The state cabinet approved modifications to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888 on Wednesday, paving the way for the appointment of an administrator in the BMC after March 7. The revisions are necessary since the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, does not provide for the appointment of an administrator in the
BMC.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, led by the Shiv Sena, and the
BJP, have already begun preparations for the impending elections in these civic bodies. Other backward classes (OBCs) are expected to have seats reserved in these bodies, as state Governor BS Koshyari recently approved a law passed by the state legislature that would offer a 27 percent quota to OBCs in these bodies.
In addition, the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission (MSBCC), in an interim report based on OBC data submitted by the state government, strongly recommended that OBCs be given a 27 percent political reservation in civic and local bodies for the purpose of their participation and decision-making processes in local bodies, rather than the percentage of their representations.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, led by the
Shiv Sena, and the BJP, have already begun preparations for the impending elections in these civic bodies. The terms of five Municipal Corporations, including Aurangabad, Navi Mumbai, Vasai Virar, Kalyan-Dombivali, and Kolhapur, have already ended in 2020, according to a Senior Urban Development Department Officer. Because elections could not be held owing to the pandemic, the state government had previously chosen administrators to these municipal bodies.
In addition, between May and October, the terms of eight Municipal Corporations, including Latur, Parbhani, Chandrapur, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Malegaon, Panvel, Mira-Bhayander, and Nanded, will expire.
