As the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections approach, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) budget, being passed following its criticism of the ruling Shiv the BJP has now moved to put the Shiv Sena on the defensive over Hindutva. Yogita Koli, a
BJP corporator, sent Mayor Kishori Pednekar a notice of motion on Thursday, demanding that the Bhagavad Gita be recited in BMC-run schools. Koli wrote in the letter that the Bhagavad Gita promotes noble morals and that it should be recited at BMC-run schools for future generations' benefit.
Koli emphasized the significance of the Bhagavad Gita, saying that it has been instructing people for over 5,000 years. "I'm on the Education Committee, and I believe that the Bhagavad Gita should be taught in BMC-run schools. It would be incorrect to claim that we moved this notice of motion with the approaching elections in mind "Koli said
After the MVA administration took office, the state BJP wasted no time in calling the Shiv Sena's version of Hindutva into doubt. BJP protested throughout the shutdown, demanding that temples be reopened and raising doubts about the Shiv Sena's Hindutva.
Congress responded to the letter by alleging that it is part of the BJP's election agenda. "What is the significance of the notice of motion being moved ahead of the election?" Why not try it in 2017? "They could have done it in five years," Ravi Raja, the Congress group leader in BMC, remarked.
"Why only Bhagavad Gita," Raja cynically observed. Epics like the Ramayan and Mahabharata, in my opinion, should also be taught in BMC-run schools." Rais Shaikh, a
Samajwadi Party MLA from Bhiwandi, has written to Pednekar requesting her to reject Koli's notice. Shaikh noted in his letter that any notice of motions connected to religious education would be moved to the all-party group leader's meeting. He claimed that the BJP is attempting to polarise society along religious lines in order to garner more voters.
