The state government devised a plan along these lines in 2016-2017, but the BMC failed to implement it, escalating the problem.
BMC polled 1,28,443 hawkers in 2014 and received around 99,435 ideas from 24 wards. The civic authority had also set up a committee to review the applications that had been submitted. Following the examination, the committee approved about 15,361 applicants and decided to issue certificates to them.
The same committee had also given its blessing and certification for 30,832 locations across 400 city highways. However, there has yet to be a successful implementation. "BMC has not provided any certificates to eligible hawkers, which is why those 30 thousand spaces are still unoccupied," Singh claimed. The BMC is giving Mumbaikars incorrect information; all of the 15 thousand qualifying hawkers are over 50 years old, not newcomers."
He further said that BMC is delaying the implementation of the policy on purpose. He further stated that the BMC does not intend to apply it because the civic body would be distributing food truck licences, which means that hawkers who have been waiting for this policy will have to bear the brunt of it. Rajhans has warned the mayor that unless he implements the policy within the next eight days, the BJP and its leaders will protest against the BMC.
