Despite demands from both ruling and opposition MPs, the
Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi administration would not grant tax exemption to The Kashmir Files. On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar denied the tax relief request and referred the matter to the Centre, saying that if the Centre grants tax relief, it will apply to all states. He was responding to a debate in the state assembly about the annual budget for 2022-23.
Pawar recalled that the state had previously granted tax exemptions to the 'Mission Mangal,' 'Tanaji,' and 'Panipat' companies. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Kashmir Files specifically. If the decision is made, it will apply across the country; films will be tax-free from Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari," he remarked. The
BJP staged a walkout to convey their point but returned to the house as Pawar finished his response.
This film is already tax-free in the BJP-ruled states of Goa, MP, Karnataka, Haryana, and Gujarat. Pawar also proposed an increase in the legislators' development fund from Rs 4 crore to Rs 5 crore in an effort to keep members from both the government and opposition parties happy. The government and opposition parties greeted his statement with shouts of slogans and beating of seats.
Pawar flatly refuted the opposition's claims that the undeveloped Vidarbha and Marathwada were overlooked in cash allocation, especially after the statutory development boards for these two regions were abolished.
"The government has set aside 26.04 percent of the yearly budget to address Vidarbha's development backlog, compared to the Governor's cash allocation formula of 23.03 percent. This implies the government has allotted an additional 3%, or Rs 2,000 crore, to the Vidarbha region," he explained.
According to Pawar, the allocation for Marathwada is 18.66 percent, compared to 18.75 percent under the Governor's calculation, which is only 0.11 percent less. He stated that 55.29 percent of the money had been given for the remainder of Maharashtra, compared to 58.23 percent as per the Governor's criteria. "The Maha Vikas Aghadi government is committed to the state's total development, and it is not in their ethos to ignore any single region," he said.
Pawar also slammed the opposition's allegations of budget juggling, claiming that their claims were unfounded. According to him, the revenue shortfall will be less than 3% of GDP, which is within the limits of Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management.
