In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray,
BJP MLA Amit Satam called his attention to the declining number of BMC-run schools in Mumbai. In his letter, he also chastised Thackeray on the problem of business names in Marathi. He suggested that the
Shiv Sena launch a campaign to safeguard Marathi schools rather than requiring businesses to display Marathi name plates.
Satam wished the chief minister on the occasion of the Shiv Sena's 51st foundation day, recalling that the party was founded by late Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray to deliver justice to the Marathi people. However, he claimed that the Marathi language has been neglected since Balasaheb's death.
"It is really unfortunate that
BMC's Marathi schools are being closed when the Shiv Sena is in power." Do you have no interest in Marathi schools? I also wrote a letter in similar respect last year. "However, you choose to ignore," Satam added. Giving specific facts concerning BMC Marathi schools, the BJP spokesperson stated that there were 385 Marathi schools in Mumbai with 81,126 pupils in 2012-13. In the last ten years, the number has dropped dramatically, with just 272 schools and 34,014 pupils remaining in 2021-22.
"Over the last ten years, 110 Marathi schools have been closed, which is a significant number." According to my understanding, 47,202 children were compelled to quit their institutions. On the one side, you constantly cry foul for Marathi's pride while basking in power. However, Marathi schools and pupils are declining by 50%," he stated.
