Corporators from all the parties in the BMC are struggling to get funds to carry out the development works in their respective wards with the BMC elections less than a year away.

As per the norms, each corporator gets Rs 60 lakh as the corporator fund every year. Apart from this, the standing committee allocates the ‘development funds’ to the corporators based on the strength of the party and their requests.

This year, while each BJP corporator will get an extra Rs 1 crore, the Sena corporators have managed to get just Rs 70 lakh.

Party Corporators Development Funds (in crores)
BJP 31 34
ShivSena 75 62
MNS 27 6.5
Samajwadi Party (SP) 8 6
NCP 14 7.5
Congress 51 12

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is currently ruled by the ShivSena-BJP alliance with Sena being the bigger partner having 75 corporators while the BJP has 31 corporators. ShivSena said most of the funds have been kept aside for its projects of the party rather than handing it over the corporators.

The congress is unhappy with the fund allocation. Devendra Amberkar, the Congress leader in the civic body said “We have over 50 corporators and it is going to be difficult to distribute Rs 12 crore among them. This is not fair. The money should have been distributed fairly.”

Refuting the Congress claims, standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse said the panel is ruling party’s discretion to allocate the funds to the parties. “We have tried to give as much possible to them.”
