For the recently ended ward reservation process, the BMC received 232 proposals and objections. Following consideration of these ideas and criticisms, a final draught will be published in the government gazette on June 13. The BMC has increased the number of electoral wards from 227 to 236 for the forthcoming election.
On May 31, the BMC held a ward reservation lottery, and 118 wards were reserved for women, 15 for Schedule Castes, and 2 for Scheduled Tribes. Following that, the Municipal body solicited suggestions and complaints about the process. According to civic officials, 232 recommendations and complaints were received between June 1 and June 6. The BMC first received a few recommendations, but in the last four days, more than 225 suggestions have been submitted.
Congress has expressed its discontent with the ward reservation and has vowed to storm the Supreme Court. Former Congress corporator and opposition leader Ravi Raja stated, "Members of Congress have submitted approximately 25 ideas. A lottery was held in 2017 for both ward reserve and ward demarcation.
Then why was the lottery mechanism used for ward reservation and not for delineation this time? We even raised concerns about the mechanism used by the BMC for ward reservation."
BJP corporator and standing committee member Bhalchandra Shirsat stated, "We are ready to fight the election." This ward demarcation and reservation process does not frighten us. The upcoming
BMC election will be fought and won by us."
