Having been hit hard by demonetisation and the cash crunch, city traders are now going politician hopping to get their voices heard. First, they met the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday and yesterday they balanced their act by meeting CM Devendra Fadnavis.

While Uddhav refused to call for a bandh himself, he did express support to the traders in case they did do so. This bond between the traders and the Sena seems to have rattled the BJP, according to party sources. While traders are traditionally considered to be BJP supporters, the Sena is reaching out to them in the wake of the demonetisation chaos.

A delegation of retail traders had met Thackeray on Sunday and sought his intervention into the issues being faced by the community. The traders had also claimed that they met him after attempts to meet the chief minister failed.

After their positive meeting with Uddhav, city BJP chief Ashish Shelar stepped in and organised a meeting between the traders and the CM on Tuesday. In the meeting with Fadnavis, traders sought various tax incentives to bring relief to the community’s suffering due to the scrapping of high value notes.

A delegation of around 25 to 30 traders, representing around 2 lakh retail traders from various sectors, met the chief minister and demanded that sufficient currency notes be made available, incentives on VAT and rebate in income tax.

“All ceremonies and functions, including weddings, have been postponed, which have led to losses for the traders. Thus, the government should announce ‘tax incentive package’ for traders,” said Viren Shah, president of FRTWA.

“We have asked for incentives in VAT, on electricity bills and on taxes on petrol and diesel for the next three months,” he added. The traders also demanded special counters at Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and at local bank branches for change of Rs 2000 notes and low denomination notes. Fadnavis apparently assured them that he would speak with the RBI governor on the issue.

Political insiders are claiming it to be a moral victory for the Sena for the fact that the traders went to meet him first than their traditional leaders i.e. the BJP. This could impact the fortunes during the upcoming BMC Polls.
