Government should allow us to celebrate Dahi Handi or else, BJP threatens to hold protests

The Maharashtra Government on Monday, in a virtual meeting, declared that there will be no celebration in the next week’s Dahi Handi festival as the state has still not recovered from the pandemic. This decision was opposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Mandals. The demand by them stated that the festival should be permitted to celebrate traditionally and only fully vaccinated players will attend it, with the minimum crowd, less height of the pyramid and without any commercial frills and pomp.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in the virtual meeting with the coordination committee members stated that instead of celebrating the festival, the activities related to society and healthcare should be promoted as the third wave can hit the state any time soon.  The CMO stated that the Mandals had responded positively when Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appealed to them. He stated that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said,

“The sentiment one carries for the celebration of festivals are the same everywhere, but if we see today’s situation, our priority should be healthcare. We need to understand that the rules that are being made are to save lives. People are talking about protesting against these rules, instead, they should protest against the Coronavirus.”

This decision by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was criticised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar and Ram Kadam threatening to hold a protest if they were not allowed to celebrate the festival. “It should be made sure by the government that the tradition of festivals should not be ceased, the restrictions on Hindu festivals will not be tolerated, why are restrictions made for only Hindus? We are going to celebrate the festival of Dahi Handi, even if they decide to ban it,” stated Kadam who is the biggest Dahi Handi organiser in the city.
