The scholarship amount for minority students pursuing higher education in Maharashtra was doubled on Tuesday to Rs 50,000. The state cabinet met here and decided on that effect. The scholarship amount for minority students seeking higher education in 2011 was Rs 25,000. The sum remained the same in 2018, but according to an official release, the maximum annual income that parents can have for their children and still qualify for the scholarship programme has increased from Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 8 lakhs.

The notification also noted that the penalty has now been increased to Rs 50,000. It stated that minority students pursuing education in the arts, sciences, and business up to class 12 would receive a stipend worth Rs 5,000. The increase in minority community student scholarships comes a week after the Eknath Shinde-BJP administration hired the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to conduct a thorough analysis of the social, economic, and educational standing of Muslims in 56 cities across six revenue divisions of the state.
