Loneliness and a lack of caretakers have the greatest emotional and physical impact on senior folks. The BMC has taken the initiative to develop an old age home in the city to care for the elderly. A tender for a reserved site in Goregaon East was recently issued by the civic government. The project's projected cost is Rs 13.38 crores.
"Many elders have no one to look after them, thus this has been a long-overdue request. Finally, in Goregaon East, the first old age home will be built "
BJP ex-corporator Vinod Mishra stated. The
BMC decided in 2017-18 to establish distinct policies for old-age homes and care centres, student hostels, and multifunctional housing for working women. In each of the city's 24 wards, the City's Draught Development plan 2034 (DP) calls for the construction of an old-age home, a crèche, and a women's hostel. The BMC's old age home would be built on land near Raheja Ridgewood, according to the plan.
"The BMC has given 250 bungalows to a private trust in Lower Parel to house old persons. Their food and housing are provided for them at no cost. The trustees of the BMC are members of this trust. The BMC will now construct its first old age home. It is a commendable initiative "Shiv Sena ex-corporator Sachin Padwal remarks.
The nine-story structure will be built on a 602-square-meter plot and will have a capacity of 70 people. It will include all necessary and supplementary activities for seniors. Although there are several private old age homes in the city, this is the first BMC-built facility. "Once it's ready, the civic council will pick an NGO to administer it under the CSR fund," said Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar, who also oversees the Planning Department.
On the ground floor, there will be a dispensary, medical shop, and administration room; on the first floor, there will be a daycare and physiotherapy room; on the second floor, there will be a dining room, kitchen, and laundry; and on the third to eighth floors, there will be twin-bed and single bedrooms, with a recreation room on the ninth.
