The Shiv Sena president, Uddhav Thackeray, announced on Tuesday that his party would support the NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu in the upcoming presidential election, which is scheduled for July 18. This decision was made out of fear of another split in the party, this time by MPs, following the rebellion by 40 MLAs. After the majority of the party's 19 MPs argued strongly in favour of supporting Murmu, who is from a tribal community, rather than the opposition nominee, Yashwant Sinha, at the marathon meeting on July 11, Thackeray made a formal announcement.

Thackeray clarified that the MPs had not put any pressure on him to support Murmu and had instead left it up to him. He has started daily interactive sessions for party cadres, office holders, and elected representatives in an effort to restore the party organisation following the coup orchestrated by Eknath Shinde.

"Tribals and Shiv Sainiks employed in that community have asked the party to support Murmu in recent days. Representatives from the ST-SC community asked the Shiv Sena to support Murmu because he is the first member of a tribal community to have the opportunity to become President. Thackeray stated that the Shiv Sena would support Droupadi Murmu in the presidential election while honouring all of these requests.

"We would be pleased if an Indian tribal woman were elected President. In the past, the Shiv Sena supported UPA candidates Pranab Mukherjee and Pratibha Patil instead of NDA candidates in the 2007 and 2012 Presidential elections. The Shiv Sena is still supporting the NDA's Droupadi Murmu and adopting a different stance, according to Thackeray.

Just before Murmu is anticipated to campaign in Mumbai on July 14, he made his announcement. According to Shiv Sena insiders, the NDA candidate may meet Thackeray to express gratitude for his party's support. The timing of Thackeray's move coincides with the Shinde camp's reiteration that 12 of the Shiv Sena's 19 MPs will soon defect.
