Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Shiv Sena MP, has urged Union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to immediately halt the distribution of the "Textbook of Sociology of Nurses," which elaborates on the benefits of dowry, and to remove it from the curriculum. It is taught in our schools, which is a disgrace to the country and the constitution. I've asked the minister to remove the textbook from the curriculum as well as have a group of experts assesses all existing textbooks," she stated.

Chaturvedi stated in a letter that it was discovered that a book titled "Textbook of Sociology for Nurses" by author TK Indrani lays out the "merits and advantages" of the dowry system. This book is required reading for second-year B SC students. "Another point expressed by the author is that "ugly looking girls can be married off with beautiful dowry to well or ugly looking boys," according to the Shiv Sena MP.

"Even though dowry is criminal conduct, it is regrettable that such old notions still prevail. Even more alarming is the fact that students are being exposed to such regressive content while no action has been taken thus far. Such bolstering of the dowry system is reprehensible and should be addressed quickly," Chaturvedi added. Chaturvedi has written to the minister, requesting that rigorous measures be taken to ensure that such anti-women content is neither taught nor promoted in the future, particularly in academic institutions, and that textbooks are evaluated and certified by a panel.
