Two Mumbai corporators, one from Shiv Sena and one from BJP each are vying to contest the upcoming  state legislative council election.

If top party leaders are to be believed, Sena’s Yashodhar Phanse, Sena corporator from Andheri (West) and BJP’s Manoj Kotak, BJP corporator from Mulund are in the fray. While Kotak is the BJP’s most vocal face in the BMC,Phanse heads the civic standing committee.

The MLC polls are scheduled for December 27, where eight MLCs will be elected from local bodies. Of these, two will be elected from the BMC, which has 227 corporators. The seats were won by Shiv Sena’s Ramdas Kadam and Congress’s Bhai Jagtap.

The Sena is almost certain of securing a seat since it has 88 elected corporators and needs 75 votes for a win. However, the contest is expected to hot up for the second seat over which the Congress and the BJP will fight. The Congress has 51 corporators and the BJP has 31 while MNS has 28.

To win, both the Congress and the BJP will need MNS’s support. Congress’s ally NCP has 13 members and the Samajwadi Party (SP) has eight members.
