Former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Udhhav Thackeray's request for a casual meeting with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut was denied by the authorities of the Arthur jail. According to reports, the troubled Shiv Sena leader requested a meeting in the office of the jail superintendent to inquire about Raut's condition.

Senior jail authorities claim that a representative for Uddhav called the jail superintendent to request authorization to meet Raut, who was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last month. In connection with the Patra Chawl redevelopment scam, Raut is currently being held under judicial supervision and housed in the maximum-security Arthur Road central jail. On suspicion of money laundering, he was detained.

The jail management requested the Shiv Sena leader to contact the court for permission for the meeting instead of allowing Uddhav to meet Raut. "The jail administration made it clear that Uddhav and Raut can meet in the same way that other detainees are permitted to do so. He should ask the court for authorization before visiting Raut in custody, a jail official said.

Uddhav's close friend contacted the Arthur Road jail staff multiple times to inquire about the guidelines and processes for setting up a meeting with their party leader and the MP. Regarding Uddhav's request to speak with Raut, jail staff and administration remained mum, although they did promise that the imprisoned MP was given access to facilities in accordance with court orders.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut's judicial custody was extended by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court by 14 days to September 19, in connection with the Patra Chawl land fraud case. The Shiv Sena leader was first kept by the ED, but on August 8 was transferred to judicial custody for 14 days. Raut's custody was initially prolonged by a special PMLA court until September 5, and it has since been extended once more, this time until September 19. The Shiv Sena politician was arrested on August 1 in connection with the prevention of the money laundering case connected to the Rs 1,034 crore Patra Chawl land scam by ED authorities after they had visited his home on July 31.
