The All-Party Action Committee has given a call for a Mashal or torch March on August 9. This comes after a month when the agitation took place due to the name change of Navi Mumbai International Airport after DiBa Patil. The committee stated that if their demand is not fulfilled before August 15, they will stop the work.
This name change was proposed by Thane's Guardian Minister first in April after the supreme leader of
Shiv Sena Bal Thackeray. This proposal angered the locals who wished to have the aviation facility to be named after the late politician Dinkar Balu Patil, who is also called DiBa Patil.
The locals then formed an action committee so that the cause may be taken further. On June 10 a human protest took place all over Navi Mumbai and Raigad. The state government of Maharashtra led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray didn't pay any attention to the demand raised. After which a massive show of strength outside CIDCO Bhavan took place on June 24 by the action committee.
During the protest, some of the protestors had a meet with the officials of CIDCO and threatened them that if their needs are not fulfilled before Independence Day, they should stop the airport work. An FIR was filed against more than15,000 citizens which included the organizers and members of the committee who attended the protest.
MP Kapil Patil also backed DiBa Patil's name for the under-construction airport who has recently been inducted as minister in the Centre. No action till now has been taken by both the central and state government. The committee has decided of holding a token Mashal March next Monday to make the government aware of their demand.
"In different parts of Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and Raigad the protestors will congregate with Mashal to fulfil the demand to name the airport after DiBa Patil. We want our demands to be fulfilled and if the government fails to do so, a confrontation will be unavoidable," stated Dashrath Patil who is the President of the Action Committee.
