On July 20, several petitions regarding the dispute between Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray will be heard by a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. The petitions call for the disqualification of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs. The Eknath Shinde-led government, according to the Thackeray camp, is "illegal" until the top court rules on disqualifications, while the rebels assert that they are the true Sena with a resounding majority of party MLAs.

The legality of the choice to name Eknath Shinde as the Chief Minister is under scrutiny, according to the Shiv Sena, which had appealed to the Maharashtra Governor on July 12 not to administer the oath to any minister in the Shinde-Fadnavis government. Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena lawmaker, demanded today that Maharashtra be placed under president's rule until the Supreme Court's constitution bench renders its decision.

The Shinde camp had asked the supreme court last week to rule against their request for disqualification on the grounds that they disobeyed party orders during the vote on the speaker's election and the trust vote. Rahul Narwekar, the newly elected speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, was given the order.

53 Shiv Sena legislators received show-cause notices from Maharashtra Legislature Secretary Rajendra Bhagwat. Eknath Shinde's faction received forty of the notices, and the Uddhav Thackeray group received the other thirteen. The disqualification of legislators from the opposing faction has been demanded by both parties.
