Both parties blamed each other for the incident on Monday, a day after workers from the Congress and the BJP battled in Nagpur's Jaripatka neighbourhood. They also claimed the police were acting under political pressure. On Sunday, police said the brawl began when a group of ladies led by a Congress leader visited the office of BJP Corporator Vicky Kukreja and accused him of ignoring local issues.

BJP officials said their Corporator's office was ransacked, resulting in confrontations and cross FIRs, while Congress workers claimed Kukreja and his men misbehaved with the women. While Kukreja and his supporters were charged with rioting and other crimes under the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Youth Congress functionary Baba Khan and others were charged with rioting and other crimes.

On Monday, Pravin Datke, the BJP's city unit president in Nagpur, urged that the charges against Kukreja and his supporters be dismissed, claiming that a political plot was at work. Kukeja claimed the police were acting under the direction of Maharashtra minister and local MLA Nitin Raut, and that Khan and others had ransacked his office.

Nagpur Congress head Vikas Thakre, on the other hand, said that Dalit women who accompanied Khan were beaten up, while  AICC National Coordinator (SC department) Anil Nagrare asked that Kukreja be arrested immediately. Khan, who was present at the Congress press conference, claimed Kukreja was the one who started the brawl.
