Congress received a major setback on Sunday when its three term sitting corporator, Bhomsingh Rathod, switched sides to the Shiv Sena.
Rathod, is a corporator from Kurar in Malad East and was very close to former party general secretary, Gurudas Kamat.
Sources said Rathod’s defection has brought to fore the factionalism in the Congress, just a few days after party vice-president Rahul Gandhi asked leaders to put up a united front for the crucial civic election.
“There was lot of groupism in the party. If you met one leader, other would get upset. I was fed-up with this and did not want it to affect my political career,” said Rathod, who hails from Rajasthan. “Only 250-300 Marwaris live in my ward. But all the Marathi and North-Indian people too voted for me,” he added.
For the Sena, a locally well-known face from the Marwari community could be useful in the civic polls to project itself as a party of and for all communities, especially since Gujaratis and Marwaris are seen as
BJP loyalists.
“Many corporators in touch with different leaders. They will join the party when the time comes,” said Sunil Prabhu, former mayor and Sena legislator from Dindoshi, who was instrumental in bringing Rathod into the party.
The Congress has put up a brave defense in this regard citing that Rathod was feeling threatened as former Congress legislator and former opposition leader in the
BMC Rajhans Singh was keen to contest the civic elections from his ward.
“The issue was raised with senior leaders of the Mumbai Congress. Rathod was of the view that he may not get a ticket for the civic polls.
We assured him that most of the sitting corporators would get tickets. Apart from this, we can’t stop him from joining the Sena,” a leader said.
