To devise a strategy for the Mumbai municipal elections slated to be held in February 2017, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has setup a informal group under Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and union minister Piyush Goyal.

The BJP leadership is keen to win the civic body elections. The Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC) is India’s richest municipal corporation with annual budget of Rs37000 crore. The BMC is ruled by the BLP- Shiv Sena alliance for about two decades, but the BJP is keen on wresting it from its ally or at least increasing its footprint in the civic body, where it now plays second fiddle to the Sena.

“The group has been set up to assess the ground situation and prepare an overall strategy ahead of the polls. We need to know where the party stands, how many seats we can contest,” said a senior party functionary.
