Dharavi residents sent a defamation notice to Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte for his comment that if Aarey Colony was not developed, it would turn into “another Dharavi”.

His comment was strongly criticised by Dharavi residents who said that it was unfair to always describe Dharavi as a leading example of Mumbai’s problem of encroachments. Despite the challenges, Dharavi is known for its leather products, handmade goods and women self-help groups.

The defamation notice was sent by Shiv Sena corporators Avkash Jadhav and Rajendra Suryawanshi on residents behalf. The notice was drafted by advocate Ajay Masane, threatens legal action against Kunte if he does not withdraw his comment and tender an unconditional apology to residents within a week.
