Demonetization: BJP leaders reach out to people in queues with tea and biscuits

The Bhartiya Janata Party leaders in Maharashtra have taken a novel way of helping people standing in queues outside banks and ATMs, that of giving tea and water to those people. The karyakartas (rank and file) have been directed to go to the banks and distribute water and biscuits to the people who are forced to wait for hours to exchange or withdraw money.

Party members have been asked to chat with the people informally, explaining to them the larger benefits of the Centre’s decision— how it will help the poor and middle class in the long run and why they should support the PM in this mission.

This exercise aims at calming down the anger amongst people by delivering the PMs message directly to them and telling them to unite against this fight against corruption. This is significant considering the civic elections across the state which are slated to begin from the third week of November to go on until February.

Madhav Bhandari, senior BJP leader and spokesperson, along with his team has been helping citizens in Chembur and nearby areas since Sunday.

On Tuesday, party spokesperson Shaina NC too visited a dozen banks around the Muslim-concentrated Byculla area of Mumbai to speak with harried citizens. “We will continue doing so for many days,” said Shaina, admitting that banks needed to fasten the process.

The message is clear and loud. The BJP cares about minorities, a strong vote bank which had overwhelmingly supported the saffron party in the Lok Sabha and the assembly polls, and is also crucial to winning several seats in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Bhandari says,”Party workers across the state have been advised to help the people in all possible ways.”
