On Thursday, around 30 BJP workers from the Bandra West constituency (Ashish Shelar’s home turf) have joined the Sena, as per the reports claimed by Shiv Sena. The switch by the workers, mostly youth activists, comes days after the BJP drew two Sena leaders — former legislator Suresh Gambhir and BEST committee member Sunil Ganacharya — into its fold.

Trade union leader Irfan Shaikh Pindara, who headed BJP’s minority cell in Bandra, Shafique Qureshi, Irshand Memon, Abdul Munshi and Rehan Momin are among those who joined the Sena on Thursday.

But a BJP leader said some of the people who joined the Sena played no major role in his party, while others were not its members. “Those how went weren’t even office-bearers. The Sena seems to be desperate and is taking anyone it can get. It’s laughable,” he said. “The BJP will win Bandra in the municipal polls.”

But Rahul Kanal, who is part of Aaditya Thackeray’s Yuva Sena, insisted around 30 BJP workers from Shelar’s backyard had switched loyalties. “They were frustrated in the BJP and wanted to work under the leadership of Uddhav and Aaditya Thackeray. We will ensure that the Sena opens its account in Bandra (W) in the upcoming elections,” Kanal said.

He added that the police issued a notice to prevent the youth activists from joining the Sena.

Meanwhile, some workers from the All India Majlise-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen also joined the Sena on Thursday.
