Mumbai: BMC turns down the promise made in the 2017 BMC elections to set up ‘Dabbewala Bhavan’
In a recent statement given by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) it stated that there is no available land for setting up ‘Dabbewala Bhavan’ concerning the big name of Dabbawalas in the city of Mumbai. The Shiv Sena government's plan seems to be turned down by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its statement said that at the current time they do not have any land available with the Estate Department and also the Development plan (2034) does not provide any reservation marked for ‘Dabbewala Bhavan’.

In the 2017 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the Shiv Sena which now directs the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had promised to set up Dabbewala Bhavan in respect of the popularity they have in the city of Mumbai. Everything was declared, even the budget for Dabbewala Bhavan was declared in the budget speech 2021-22 by Iqbal Singh Chahal which was estimated to be Rs 1 crore in central Mumbai.

The fame that has been earned by the Dabbewalas in the city of Mumbai since 1870 is unimaginable by presenting their exceptionally good management skills in delivering cooked food to more than 2 lakh employees all over the city. Not only in the city of Mumbai but Dabbewalas have earned admiration from all over the world.

This proposal of setting up Dabbewala Bhavan was kept in front by Shiv Sena Corporator Kishori Pednekar, now the Mayor in the year 2019, which was then accepted by Mayor Vishwanath Mahadshwar. Replying to not setting up of Dabbewala Bhavan, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that “Under a certain act the reservation for Dabbewala Bhavan land can be made, but the Estate Department in the current time does not have any land available, so it would not be possible to reserve the land for the Bhavan.

In the coming times if we can get vacant land we will surely reserve the land for Dabbewala Bhavan,” a reply submitted by Chahal before the meeting of the general body held on 23 September. The Maharashtra Government needs to think a little more about it, as it may play a very vital point in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022.
