In the run-up to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, corporators are busy beautifying and developing the city's open spaces. The Garden Infrastructure Cell of the Civil Body has so far received more than 160 suggestions for beautification of gardens in corporate election wards.BMC data shows that 164 proposals have been received for gardening-related work in the last few months, and they are planned to be implemented within the next one year.
Most of these proposals - 25 - are from K-East (Andheri, Jogeshwari), 20 in M-East (Govandi, Mankhurd) and 15 in L Ward (Kurla, Sakinaka). There are 227 elected corporators in Mumbai. The Shiv Sena has 97, the BJP 83 and the Congress 29. It is estimated that from 2017 to 2019, development and beautification of 94 parks have been completed and work on 35 other parks is underway. Officials said no further action had been taken last year due to labour shortages caused by the Covid pandemic and lockdown. With the polls coming up, most corporators want to show some development activity in their electoral wards.
They are looking after either the demolition ceremony for the permitted works or the inauguration when the work is completed,”BMC officials said. In such cases, the corporates have written to BMC's Garden Infrastructure Cell (GIC) to highlight the poor condition of the gardens in their wards and to urgently implement development activities. However, officials reveal that most of the open spaces are in good condition, but the corporators are still working on their development.
An official said anonymously, “Many corporators' proposals include gardens that were beautified or developed about three or three years ago. But they force them to be beautiful. After receiving the letters, the civil staff visited some places and found that most of the open spaces were in good condition. City officials, who have been flooded with numerous letters to check if the garden really needs beautification, filter these suggestions through site visits. Some of the gardens are located in Mulund, Govandi and Andheri. There are 1,022 open spaces under BMC. Last year, the civil body had allocated Rs 70 crore to GIC. But in 2021-22, it has been reduced to Rs 53 crore, officials said. Under the beautification drive, he undertakes activities such as the construction of jogging and walking tracks, seating, installation of gym equipment, and horticulture.
