With barely five days remaining to apply for the second round of the Smart City contest, the Maharashtra state government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has snubbed Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and asked the cash-rich civic body to implement Smart City concept on its own.

While six municipal corporations will get Rs50 crore to start the project ,the BMC will not be getting a single penny from the state government and and will have to follow the guidelines charted out by the Central government which will be uniform for all the 100 smart cities. Also the state government will not consider any of the civic body’s 14 demands.

The municipal corporation of Nashik, Amravati, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Kalyan-Dombivli and Thane will get Rs50 crore to begin with various projects under Smart City. However, the BMC and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation will have to implement the projects on its own.
