Following a series of meetings between CM Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, the BJP and Shiv Sena seems to be friends again.
This recent development is owing to a common goal for both the parties, ‘Cong-NCP Free Maharashtra’. Sources from both parties said that they see a huge opportunity to make the Congress and Sharad Pawar’s NCP redundant in Maharashtra, and that can only be achieved if the “Hindutva parties were united”.
While there’s no guarantee that a compromise will be reached before next year’s BMC elections, the leaders of both parties have been told to stop tearing into each other.
The peace process was initiated last month, when Fadnavis bonded with Uddhav over dinner at the latter’s residence, Matoshree. Ten days later, on July 27, Fadnavis used the Sena mouthpiece Saamna – whose acerbic editorials had the BJP leaders seething — to further cement the friendship.
The chief minister penned a tribute on Uddhav’s 56th birthday, calling him an “elder brother”. Fadnavis wrote, “Uddhav is large-hearted as a friend and the friendship we share is a real one.” Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi played his part by tweeting a birthday greeting.
The Sena chief also promised “full support” to the Fadnavis government, saying, “I want to reassure Fadnavis, I am willing to lend support and walk shoulder-to-shoulder. For the welfare of the state, I am ready to provide my sainiks.” Among the things agreed upon was the formation for a joint co-ordination committee of the MLAs and the ministers to clear pending works, and a meeting between Fadnavis and Uddhav every three months.
The BJP and the Sena are still jittery about forming a tie-up for the BMC elections, but an alliance could be forged for other civic elections. “Ten local bodies will be going to polls in the coming months and a tie-up with the Sena cannot be ruled out, but not for the BMC elections,” a BJP functionary said.
