Late Wednesday night, the Marine Drive police arrested Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ashish Shelar for making an "objectionable" remark about Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Kishori Pednekar. Shelar allegedly stated whether Mayor was "sleeping" for 72 hours while Mayor over Worli cylinder blast in which three people died, including an infant.

Pednekar went to the Marine Drive police station late on Wednesday to give her statement, which was recorded. Shelar has been charged under sections 354 (outraging a woman's modesty) and 509 (insulting a woman's modesty) of the Indian Penal Code, according to authorities (IPC)

On Tuesday, Pednekar and a large number of Shiv Sena female corporators met with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and filed a complaint against Shelar, while the state Women's Commission also protested Shelar's comments and ordered police to submit a report.

Shelar blasted Pednekar last week for reportedly taking too long to reach out to the victims of the Worli cylinder blast. Shelar allegedly questioned Pednekar if she had slept for 72 hours during a media interview. Shelar quickly corrected his error after mentioning the word "sleeping" in Marathi.

Following a cylinder blast at BDD Chawl last week, three people perished, including the father and his four-month-old infant. They were being treated at Nair Hospital when they died during treatment, allegedly as a result of hospital officials' incompetence.
Patients do not receive timely treatment at the hospital, according to Shelar, and they do not feel comfortable at the municipal hospital.
He went so far as to suggest that neither the mayor nor Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials had visited the site. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) resigned from the health committee in protest after the incident.
