BJP begins wooing Shirdi Sai Baba mandals as a counterweight to the politically influential Ganesh Mandals

In the run up to the BMC Elections 2017, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun wooing the Shirdi Sai Baba Mandals as a counter-weight to the politically and financially influential Ganesha mandals, 70% of which are controlled by the Shiv Sena.

The Mumbai city chief, Ashish Shelar, will be meeting today the office bearers of nearly 500 Sai Baba temples and Sai mandals across the city at Shivaji Mandir, in Dadar. There are over 750 Sai temples and over 450 Sai mandals across the city.

Political analysts have termed this move of the BJP as a brilliant one, citing that even if in one temple, there are around 1000 devotees who are eligible to vote, 1200 temples and mandals would mean reaching out to 12,00,000 voters and in municipal elections a margin of 500 or 1000 votes can make a difference between winning and losing.

At the meeting which will be held today, there will be BJP leader Suresh Haware, who was recently appointed the chairman of the Shirdi Saibaba Sansthan Trust. The meeting will be followed by the bhajan recital by singer Ajit Kadkade.

In the past, the BJP tried to float an organisation called Maharashtra Ganeshotsav Mahasangh, to control the Ganesha mandals across the city, as a move to challenge the supremacy of the Shiv Sena controlled Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, but met with limited success.
