An announcement was made on Thursday evening that the BJP and the Shiv Sena will be contesting elections to 212 local bodies together. This announcement came after much posturing and threats of going solo by both the parties. Many political observers say that this might portend a partnership between the two bickering allies for the upcoming BMC elections.

The annoucement came to many as a surprise as just last week, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray met with his party legislators and office bearers and told them to prepare to take on the BJP, if the ally did not fall in line. Thackeray wanted a larger say in seat-sharing with the BJP in civic corporations in Mumbai, Thane and Pune where elections will be held early next year.

A senior BJP leader said that the alliance was finalised after a phone call between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray. “The alliance was needed to ensure that the Congress and NCP don’t make a comeback. The chief minister was very keen and Uddhavji was also on the same page. It is likely that they will form an alliance for the BMC elections too,” the functionary said.

Thursday’s announcement was made at a meeting between Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and state BJP chief Raosaheb Danve. Raut said that Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray always wanted an alliance. “Uddhavji always wanted the alliance to stay. There will be an alliance from Chanda to Bandha,” Raut said.
