BJP alleges a scam on BMC for selling junk metal at low rates
An allegation has been made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of a scam in their contract for scrap metals. The allegation stated that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is selling its metal scrap from its decommissioned water pipelines at a very low price which is causing loss to the BMC. The opposition claimed that the contractor is supposed to collect the scrap and then a fixed rate is paid per kilo of metal.

In a written complaint by Vinod Mishra, the BJP corporator to Iqbal Chahal the Municipal Commissioner stated that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was selling scrap from its British era pipelines at such a rate which is very low than the market price, that is for Rs 32 crore. “The rates of metal in 2021 are very high but still the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) choose to sell the metal scrap at the rates of 2020.

The result of this will be a loss of 5 crores to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Many buyers are willing to pay more price than the current price from the contractor the BMC has chosen, so the contract should be put on hold and no work order should be issued,” stated BJP corporator Vinod Mishra.

Responding to these allegations a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer stated that “The rates for the scrap metals were fixed for two years by us. The contractor who has been given the contract will be disposing of all scrap from all the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations departments. So why would we introduce fresh tenders, and there is no meaning of a contractor willing to give higher rates after the contract has been awarded.”

It is an obvious point that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) falls under allegations by the opposition as it already faces a cash crunch. As the value of metals fluctuates in the market it becomes necessary for BMC to ensure that they update their prices instead of a fixed price for two years.
