Mumbai: Amid questions over flood relief in Konkan, Shiv Sena steps up community work
As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022 approach Shiv Sena’s stakes and presence are high in the flood-hit areas of the Konkan, as the community work is going on to help victims and their kin. The challenge for the Shiv Sena doubles here as they will have to keep the Konkan district voters and Mumbai voters together on their side. Many residents in the Mumbai city have their roots in Konkan districts, making these districts vital for Shiv Sena in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022

8 MLAs among the 14 of the Shiv Sena are from Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The Shiv Sena’s traditional voter base resides in the heart of Konkan. The Mahad constituency, which covers the Poladpur taluka in Raigad, a traditional Shiv Sena bastion, has been affected by floods and at the same time landslides.

A recent study by disaster management up to August 5 states that more than 3,500 people are the ones who are shelters in the 82 camps. The people who have been shifted to safer locations are at 13,000. “As many people were affected by the floods and landslides and there was no proper management and relief work there are many who have left Mahad for a temporary basis into other locations. This is surely going to affect the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election (BMC) 2022,” stated Chandrakant Kokane, a Mahad resident.

Shiv Sena Politician Shahu Gujar from Sindhudurg stated that “When we see the average, each family in the three districts have one member who stays and works in the city of Mumbai. So, high chances of influence are felt in their native places as well. Around a third of Mumbai, voting is influenced by the Konkan factor.”
