An open war of words has begun between leader of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Akbaruddin Owaisi, and senior Congress leader Arif Naseem Khan, a former minister. During multiple meetings over the last few days, Owaisi and Khan have exchanged barbs bordering on and even with the use of foul language.
It all started with Owaisi’s rally at Khan’s constituency , Chandivli, where the legislator from Hyderabad accused Khan of helping land sharks grab Wakf properties. “These were not your father’s properties. Once we gain enough strength, we will restore them to the Wakf board,“ said Owaisi.
Not the one to suffer an assault silently , Khan returned the fire. “You are BJP’s agent and levelling baseless charges. Your party first split secular votes in 2014 assembly polls in Maharashtra, then tried in the Bihar elections where Muslims rejected you. You are trying to split Muslim votes in UP and also at the upcoming BMC elections,“ said Khan, adding that he has vowed to “expose the self-declared Muslim messiahs“.
“I was refraining from per sonal attacks, but this in-disciplined import from Hyderabad and his lackeys in the MIM will not be allowed to poison the atmosphere here. They are polarizing the votes and helping communal forces to weaken the city’s secular spirit,“ Khan added.
A community leader observed that the Owaisis want to emerge as sole leaders of the community . “Be it Azam Khan in UP or Naseem Khan in Maharashtra, the Owaisi brothers are trying to discredit them.“
