BENGALURU: Fresh tensions have surfaced within the ruling Congress in Karnataka after senior leaders publicly voiced disagreement over former party MP and ex-Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s recent allegations of “vote theft” during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna, a close aide of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has once again sparked controversy with remarks that drew a sharp counterattack from supporters of Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.

Rajanna’s statements came in the wake of a rally held in Bengaluru last week, led by Rahul Gandhi—who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. During that rally, Rahul accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of bias and blamed voter list irregularities for the Congress’ defeat in key constituencies such as Bangalore Central.

Challenging this narrative, Rajanna said the party must also accept part of the blame. “We must not forget that these voter lists were revised when our own government was in power,” Rajanna told reporters. “Why did we remain silent back then? Yes, there were irregularities, but it is embarrassing for us that they occurred right under our watch.”

He reminded colleagues that the ECI had invited objections after publishing the draft rolls. “It was our duty to raise concerns at the right time—especially in places like Mahadevapura, where malpractices are rampant. Instead, we kept quiet when action was needed and are raising the issue only now,” Rajanna said. His comments infuriated members of Shivakumar’s camp, who accused Rajanna and other senior leaders of harming the party’s image. The rift comes amid an ongoing power tussle between supporters of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar over the chief minister’s post.

Adding to Congress’ worries, Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa, speaking at a party forum, urged the state leadership to bolster its grassroots network ahead of upcoming zilla and taluk panchayat polls. He warned that the BJP’s influence was growing and said the Congress had failed to “keep the BJP in check.”

Shivakumar loyalists alleged that Rajanna and others were trying to destabilise the party and vowed to take the matter to the high command. “The state government has already decided to probe the ‘vote theft’ claims and has directed the Advocate General to submit a report,” said HD Ranganath, MLA from Kunigal. “Making negative statements against our own party and government before the investigation is complete is unacceptable. The high command must act firmly to stop such anti-party activities.”

The BJP was quick to seize the opportunity. Former Mahadevapura MLA Aravind Limbavali said, “Rahul Gandhi should open his eyes at least now, as his own party members are echoing what we’ve been saying. I will soon present a detailed report in New Delhi.”

While discussing voter list discrepancies on Friday, Limbavali refrained from mentioning Shivakumar’s Kanakapura seat. However, he targeted CM Siddaramaiah’s Varuna constituency and those of his allies, including Chamarajpet (BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan), Gandhinagar (Dinesh Gundu Rao), Sandur (E Annapoorna), and BTM Layout (Ramalinga Reddy).

With internal divisions widening and the opposition sharpening its attacks, the “vote theft” controversy has now escalated into a full-fledged political storm—threatening Congress’ unity in Karnataka just months ahead of crucial local body elections.
